Bulmershe Celebrates World Earth Day
Back
This week, our school community came together to celebrate World Earth Day 2026. The theme for this year is "Our Power, Our Planet," a message that resonated throughout our hallways as we looked at how our collective actions can protect the environment. At Bulmershe, we believe that academic excellence and social responsibility go hand in hand, and seeing our students lead the way in sustainability is a proud moment for us all.
Student Leadership in Action
The highlight of the week was a series of student-led assemblies for Years 7 to 10. These were organised and delivered by our Geo Leaders, a club of passionate students dedicated to environmental change. Taking on the responsibility of speaking to hundreds of their peers is no small task, but our Geo Leaders showed incredible resilience and leadership.
During the presentations, the group explored the definition of a community and what it truly means to be a "citizen" within it. They challenged their peers to think beyond themselves and consider their role in the wider school and global environment. It is this spirit of student leadership that enriches our school community and prepares our young people to be "world-ready".
Respecting Our Environment
One of the most impactful parts of the assembly was the look at our own school site. The Geo Leaders shared photos of litter found across the school, sparking a conversation about our core values of Respect and Responsibility. We often talk about these values in the classroom, but seeing how they apply to the playground and our green spaces makes them real for our students.A sustainable community is only as strong as the people within it. The Geo Leaders reminded us that being a Bulmershe citizen means making small, positive choices every single day. These actions include:
- Putting all litter in the bins provided
- Walking on pavements instead of the grass to protect our nature
- Turning off electrical equipment and lights when they are not in use
- Reducing paper waste in lessons
Sustainable Futures
The assemblies also looked ahead to the future, highlighting how these values translate into professional careers. We explored roles such as Environmental Engineering, where professionals earn significant salaries while managing multi-agency projects to achieve net-zero targets. By connecting our daily actions to future careers, we hope to inspire our students to see themselves as the innovators and leaders of tomorrow.
How Families Can Help
We know that many of our families are already highly invested in sustainability. To support the work being done by the Geo Leaders, we encourage you to talk about these themes at home. Simple steps like walking to school when possible or recycling plastic bottles can make a massive difference when we all act together.
If your child is interested in driving sustainable change and wants to become a Geo Leader, they are very welcome to join the club. It is a fantastic way to build confidence, teamwork and leadership skills while making a tangible difference to our school.
At Bulmershe, we provide unrivalled care for our students and our planet. We are excited to see where our "High-Achieving Heart" takes us next on this green journey.
